Hands and nails Nail treatments

What is a nail treatment

A nail treatment is a product applied to the nail plate itself to improve its strength, hydration or appearance, without its main purpose being to add colour. Some are used alone, to keep nails looking well-groomed with a natural finish, while others also work as a base coat under polish. They're the answer to very common issues: nails that split, peel in layers, bend too easily or show ridges on the surface.

Types of nail treatment

Hardeners

They strengthen the nail to reduce breakage. They're usually applied in two coats a couple of times a week, removing them completely between applications. Some also add a light pink tint for a tidy, polished look without coloured nail polish.

Strengthening serums with keratin

With a lightweight texture and instant absorption, they replenish the protein the nail is made of and restore hydration and elasticity, so it bends instead of breaking. Since they don't need drying time, they can be reapplied several times a day.

Smoothing base coats

They fill in ridges and even out the surface in a single coat. They can be worn alone, with a semi-matte finish, or under polish for a more even colour result.

How to choose the right nail treatment

If your nails break or flake because they're dry and stiff, start with a keratin serum to restore their elasticity. If they're soft and break easily, a hardener provides the strength they lack. When the issue is cosmetic, with ridges or an uneven surface, a smoothing base is the most direct option. These needs can be combined, always following the instructions for use of each product.

How to apply a nail treatment

Always start with clean, dry nails, free of polish residue or grease, with the cuticles pushed back. Apply thin layers covering the whole nail and let it dry well before continuing. Consistency is what makes the difference: nails grow slowly, so it's best to keep up the routine for several weeks before assessing the results. Completing it with daily cuticle oil helps the new nail grow back more flexible and resistant.
