What blush is and what it's for
Blush is the makeup product that brings colour and life back to the face. After evening out the skin with foundation, the face can look flat, missing that natural flush we associate with a healthy look; blush brings it back in one step. Well chosen and well blended, it's the famous "good complexion" effect: it adds freshness, visibly rejuvenates the whole look and gives dimension to the cheekbone.
It's also one of the most rewarding products for those who wear little makeup: with just a light foundation, blush and mascara, you already have a complete look.
Liquid, cream or powder blush: which to choose
Powder blush
The classic format and the easiest to control. It's applied with a brush, blends evenly and gives a more matte, polished finish. It works best on oily or combination skin, as it helps keep shine in check, and it's the most practical option for touch-ups during the day.
Cream blush
It melts into the skin and leaves a dewy finish, like a blush that comes from within. It's ideal for dry, dull or mature skin: it doesn't settle into texture or accumulate in fine lines. It's applied with fingers or a sponge, and many cream formats are multi-use: they can also add a touch of colour to the lips.
Liquid blush
The favourite for natural finishes. A few well-blended drops merge completely with the foundation and offer excellent longevity, with that "flushed skin" effect that doesn't look like makeup. That said, it requires speed: it sets quickly, so it's best to work cheek by cheek and use a small amount, as it's highly pigmented.
How to choose your blush shade
- Fair skin: soft pinks, light peach and powdery tones; very intense shades can look harsh.
- Medium skin: vivid pinks, corals and warm peaches, which give instant radiance.
- Deep skin: deep tones like raspberry, plum, brick or intense orange, which really show up on the skin.
- According to undertone: cool undertones harmonise with pinks and berries; warm undertones with corals, peaches and earthy tones.
An infallible reference point: the colour of your cheeks after a brisk walk or a bit of exercise. That natural flush is the shade you're trying to recreate.
Where to apply blush according to face shape
The universal starting point is to smile, find the top of the cheekbone and blend from there towards the temple. From this base, small adjustments change the effect:
- Round face: apply a little higher and diagonally towards the temple to visually elongate.
- Long face: keep the colour on the central part of the cheek, horizontally, to avoid stretching the features further.
- Square face: blend in soft circles over the cheekbone to soften the angles.
- Lifting effect: concentrate the product on the highest part of the cheekbone, always blending upwards towards the temple.
How to apply each format
- Powder: after setting powder, with a soft brush and a light amount of product; tap off the excess before touching the face and build the colour up in layers.
- Cream: before powder, dabbing on with fingers or a sponge, blending the edges until you can't tell where it starts.
- Liquid: one or two drops over your base, blended quickly with fingers or a damp sponge, cheek by cheek.
The golden rule of textures applies here too: creams and liquids go before powders; powder always goes over powder. Mixing up the order is the most common cause of patchiness.
Common mistakes with blush
- Applying too much product at once: it's much easier to add than to remove, especially with highly pigmented liquids.
- Applying it too close to the nose or too low, which hardens and 'drags down' the look.
- Not blending the edges: a well-applied blush has no visible start or end.
- Using cream or liquid over already-set powder: it will lift the base and create patches.
- Choosing the shade based only on how it looks in the packaging: test it on your skin, as the result changes depending on your undertone.
With the right formula for your skin, a shade that mimics your natural flush, and good blending, blush is probably the product with the best effort-to-result ratio in your entire makeup bag.
