What body oil is and what it's for

Body oil is a care product formulated from vegetable or essential oils that deeply nourishes and seals in the skin's moisture, leaving a feeling of softness and a slight natural glow. Unlike a cream, it doesn't contain water, so its main function is to provide lipids and strengthen the skin barrier, which is especially useful for dry, rough skin or skin prone to flaking in areas such as elbows, knees or shins.

How to choose body oil according to your skin type

Not all body oils behave the same way on the skin, so it's worth considering both the texture and how quickly it absorbs before choosing one.

Dry or very dry skin

Denser oils rich in fatty acids, such as those derived from almonds or argan, provide intense nourishment and help soothe the feeling of tightness, especially after showering or on the roughest areas of the body.

Oily or shine-prone skin

Light, fast-absorbing oils, such as those containing jojoba or grape seed, hydrate without leaving a heavy feel or greasy film, something especially appreciated by skin with more visible pores.

Sensitive skin

It's best to prioritise formulas with few ingredients and no added fragrance, looking for soothing actives like calendula, which reduce the risk of redness or discomfort after application.

Mature skin

Oils rich in antioxidants, such as rosehip or argan oil, help improve the skin's apparent elasticity and keep it looking firm, especially when applied with a light massage that promotes local circulation.

Dry body oil and other common formats

Within this category, it's common to find what is known as dry body oil, formulated to absorb quickly and leave no oily feeling on skin or clothing, very practical for morning use. There are also versions with a hint of shimmer designed to enhance skin tone in summer, and massage oils, with a somewhat denser texture, ideal for relaxation sessions or for working on specific areas of the body in more depth.

Ingredients worth checking on the label

Among the most common vegetable oils are sweet almond oil, gentle and suitable for sensitive skin, argan oil, rich in vitamin E with antioxidant properties, and jojoba oil, very similar to the skin's natural sebum and therefore well tolerated even on oily skin. Essential oils, present in small amounts, provide fragrance and in some cases soothing or revitalising properties, although it's worth keeping an eye on their concentration if the skin is reactive or exposed to the sun shortly after application. It's also common to find oils with added vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect skin against environmental damage and usually combines well with any of the vegetable oils mentioned above.

How to apply body oil to get the most out of it

The ideal time to apply body oil is right after showering, while the skin is still damp, as it helps lock in that surface water instead of having to provide it from scratch. Just a few drops spread with your hands, massaging gently into the driest areas, and letting it absorb before dressing, is enough. Used at night, it can also be combined with a cream to boost hydration during rest hours.

Common mistakes when using body oil

Applying too much is one of the most frequent mistakes: it leaves a greasy feeling and takes longer to absorb, when in fact a small, well-distributed amount is usually enough. Another common error is applying it to completely dry skin, which reduces its effectiveness, or storing it somewhere with a lot of light and heat, which can alter the oil over time. Keeping it in a cool place and always applying it to slightly damp skin helps it perform better and stay in good condition for longer. Finally, mixing several oils without first checking how your skin reacts can cause unnecessary discomfort, so if in doubt, it's best to introduce a new product gradually and observe the response over a few days.
