Hair Conditioners

What hair conditioner is and what it's for

Hair conditioner is the step that usually follows shampoo in a washing routine. Its function is to provide softness, ease detangling and seal the hair cuticle after cleansing, leaving it more manageable and shinier. Unlike shampoo, which cleanses, conditioner lightly nourishes the hair fibre, counteracting the drying effect that washing can leave, especially on long or frizz-prone hair.

It's a fast-acting product: it doesn't need a long exposure time and its effect is noticeable immediately when you run your fingers or a comb through wet hair, which sets it apart from more intensive treatments like a hair mask.

Although it's sometimes seen as an optional step, conditioner serves an important mechanical function: it neutralises the electrical charge left on the hair's surface after washing, which is largely responsible for frizz and strands tangling with each other. That's why its effect is especially noticeable on long, curly or very voluminous hair, where friction between fibres is greater.

How to choose conditioner according to your hair type

The choice depends on the thickness, porosity and overall condition of your hair:

  • Fine hair: lightweight formulas that provide softness without weighing hair down or taking away volume at the root.
  • Thick or curly hair: richer textures, with greater detangling power and frizz control.
  • Dry or damaged hair: more nourishing formulas, although for deeper damage it's usually best to alternate with a hair mask.
  • Colour-treated hair: conditioners that help preserve colour and provide softness without weighing down bleached fibres.

The scalp almost never needs conditioner: it's best to concentrate application on mid-lengths and ends, which are the areas most exposed to friction, sun and heat tools, and therefore the ones that need it most.

Types and formats of conditioner

Besides the classic rinse-out conditioner, which is applied after shampoo and rinsed out within a few minutes, there are also fast-absorbing spray versions and denser formulas designed for very thick or curly hair that needs extra detangling. There are also conditioners specifically formulated for use before or after colouring, designed to minimise the impact of the chemical process on the hair fibre. For curly or textured hair, silicone-free versions are common, as they respect curl definition without weighing it down or building up with repeated washes.

Common ingredients

Conditioners usually combine cationic conditioning agents, which adhere to the negatively charged hair fibre and make detangling easier, with lightweight silicones that add softness and shine. Panthenol, glycerin or plant extracts are also commonly found, boosting the feeling of hydration without weighing hair down, especially in formulas designed for daily use. Formulas for fine hair tend to skip the heavier oils, while those designed for thick or very curly hair include a higher proportion of vegetable butters and fatty acids to achieve effective detangling.

How to apply conditioner correctly

After rinsing out the shampoo, spread an amount of product through the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the roots, and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing with warm or cold water, which helps close the cuticle and boost shine. A wide-tooth comb makes it easier to distribute the product evenly and detangle without pulling, especially on long or very tangled hair. On curly hair, this is a good time to finger-style the curl pattern that will show once dry, as the conditioner makes this earlier step much easier.

Common mistakes when using conditioner

  • Applying it to the scalp, which can leave the roots feeling heavy or greasy.
  • Not rinsing the product out properly, leaving residue that weighs hair down over the following days.
  • Thinking it can replace a hair mask when hair needs more intensive treatment.
  • Choosing a formula that's too rich for fine hair, which reduces volume at the root.

Used consistently and with the right technique, conditioner makes daily styling easier and keeps hair looking soft and well cared for after every wash.
