Lip gloss: instant shine, plumpness and volume effect
Few things rejuvenate a makeup look as much as a glossy lip. Lip gloss —or lip shine— is the product that achieves this effect in seconds: a light, luminous texture that reflects light, gives a sense of volume and leaves lips looking juicy and well cared for. After years of matte's reign, gloss has come back strong, now with more comfortable, less sticky formulas, often enriched with hydrating actives.
It can be worn alone, for a fresh, natural look, or over lipstick, to transform any finish into a three-dimensional lip.
What exactly is a gloss and what makes it different?
Unlike lipstick, which prioritises pigment, lip gloss prioritises shine. Its formula, rich in oils and polymers that form a luminous film, can be transparent, translucent with a hint of colour, or even quite pigmented, but always with that characteristic mirror or vinyl finish. The optical effect is immediate: light reflecting off the centre of the lip creates a sense of more volume and a smoother surface.
Types of lip gloss
- Clear gloss: the all-rounder. Enhances your natural lip tone or tops off any lipstick without altering its colour.
- Coloured gloss: a translucent veil in nude, pink, coral or cherry tones; colour and shine in a single step.
- Plumping gloss: contains ingredients that trigger a slight tingling or cooling sensation and temporarily enhance the plump appearance of the lip.
- Lip oil: a hybrid between treatment and gloss; nourishes with plant oils and leaves a more subtle, silky shine.
- Vinyl or mirror-effect gloss: maximum shine impact, with an almost lacquered finish.
How to choose your lip gloss
Based on the effect you're after
For an everyday natural look, a clear gloss or a nude-toned lip oil is foolproof. If you want presence without resorting to a fully covering lipstick, choose a coloured gloss a shade more intense than your lips. And if your goal is visibly plumper-looking lips, go for a plumping gloss and concentrate it on the centre of the mouth.
Based on your skin tone
Cool undertones look especially good with pinks, raspberries and berries; warm undertones with peaches, corals and caramels. Translucent glosses are very forgiving: since they let your natural lip show through, it's hard to pick the wrong shade.
Based on texture
Today's formulas range from light, non-sticky shine to dense, long-lasting vinyl. If the classic gloss feel bothers you, look for textures with fine oils or a 'glass' finish, which are far more comfortable.
How to apply lip gloss
- On its own: apply directly with the applicator from the centre towards the corners. For a polished result, line the contour first with a pencil in your lip shade.
- Over lipstick: let the colour set and add a drop of gloss only in the centre; you'll gain volume without taking away from the lipstick's staying power.
- Ombré effect: combine a slightly darker lip liner blended inward with gloss in the centre: lips with depth and volume.
Ingredients that make the difference
Behind the shine lies the formula, and it's worth taking a closer look. Vegetable oils — jojoba, castor, almond — provide comfort and that silky finish typical of lip oils. Hyaluronic acid helps keep the lip looking smooth and plump. Pearl particles or fine glitter add dimension, while particle-free "glass" glosses give a clean, almost liquid shine. In volumising formulas, ingredients like menthol or pepper or ginger extracts are responsible for the characteristic tingling sensation.
Tips and common mistakes
The classic mistake is quantity: a thick layer of gloss doesn't shine more, it just migrates towards the corners sooner. Thin layers with touch-ups work better. Another basic tip: on windy days, tie your hair back or choose less tacky textures; a strand of hair stuck to the lip is the age-old price of wearing gloss. And if applying over long-lasting matte lipstick, do so only in the centre so as not to lift the colour from the contour area.
With the right formula, lip gloss is the quickest shortcut to a fresh, flattering, luminous makeup look: one precise gesture and the whole face seems more awake, plump and glowing.
