What a facial serum is and what it's for

Facial serum is a concentrate of active ingredients in a lightweight texture, much more fluid than a cream, designed to penetrate the skin quickly and target a specific need: deep hydration, radiance, firmness or excess oil control. Unlike moisturiser, which seals and protects the surface of the skin, serum works in somewhat deeper layers and delivers a higher dose of active ingredients with each application. That's why it's usually applied before the cream, as an intermediate step in the routine, rather than as a replacement for it.

Why its texture makes the difference

The lightness of the serum allows it to be combined with almost any cream afterwards without overloading the skin or leaving a greasy feel. That fluidity also means it absorbs in seconds, which is handy both in the morning routine, before makeup, and in the evening routine.

How to choose the best facial serum for your skin

Choosing a facial serum depends mainly on two factors: skin type and the goal you're after. Dry skin that needs deep water replenishment is not the same as oily skin looking to control shine without drying out. Before buying, it's worth asking yourself what you want to achieve: hydrate, brighten, reduce the appearance of fine lines, or even out skin tone.

  • Dry or dehydrated skin: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, lightweight oils.
  • Oily skin or enlarged pores: niacinamide, salicylic acid, zinc.
  • Dull skin or dark spots: vitamin C, kojic acid, antioxidants.
  • Mature skin: peptides, retinol, coenzyme Q10.
  • Sensitive skin: fragrance-free formulas, with centella asiatica or panthenol.

Types of facial serum by function

Within this category there are very different types of serums. Hydrating serums, with hyaluronic acid as the star ingredient, attract and retain water in the skin. Antioxidant serums, with vitamin C or E, help protect against environmental stress and add radiance. Those containing retinol or peptides are aimed at improving firmness and visibly reducing fine lines. And those formulated with niacinamide or salicylic acid focus on regulating oil and refining the appearance of pores. Many serums combine several of these actives in a single formula, so it's worth checking the ingredients listed first.

Packaging also affects effectiveness

The packaging format is not a minor detail. Serums with ingredients sensitive to light or air, such as vitamin C or retinol, usually come in opaque bottles or with an airless dispenser, which limit contact with oxygen and extend the stability of the active ingredient. Storing them in a cool place away from direct light helps them keep their effectiveness for longer, especially once the packaging has been opened.

How to correctly apply facial serum

Serum should always be applied to clean skin, after toner and before moisturiser. Ideally, place two or three drops on your fingertips and spread them with gentle taps over the face and neck, avoiding excessive rubbing. Applying it while the skin is still slightly damp helps it absorb better and boosts its hydrating effect. If you use several serums in the same routine, it's best to apply the one with the lightest texture first and leave a few minutes between each so that every layer absorbs properly before moving on to the next step.

Common mistakes when using facial serum

A common mistake is applying too much product, thinking it will give better results: serums are formulated to work with a very small amount of product. Another common error is skipping the moisturiser afterwards, believing that the serum already does that job; in reality, both steps complement each other and are not substitutes for one another. It's also important to be patient, as the effects on firmness, radiance or skin texture are usually clearly noticeable after several weeks of consistent use, not overnight. Finally, mixing incompatible actives, such as several strong exfoliants on the same day, can weaken the skin barrier instead of improving the skin's appearance, so it's best to space out their use throughout the week.
